Faculty and students make decisions every day that drive learning in order to receive regular and consistent feedback about what each student has - and has not - learned. While formative assessment practices are informal and formal assessments made on a day-to-day basis that are intended to support student learning: to diagnose problems, determine when further review is necessary, and to help students learn more. Summative assessment judgments are made more periodically, as when a student earns a final exam score in a course, or when the culmination of a nursing student's skills and knowledge are assessed in a senior clinical.
